Travel Information

Venue: The Fairway Hotel & Spa www.fairwayhotel.co.ug will be the official hotel of JUAMI 2018. All participants who do not reside in Kampala or its vicinity will be accommodated at the Fairway. Students will be housed in either double or triple rooms. Instructors and lecturers will be housed in singles. For those booking with the hotel directly, please use the booking code JUAMI. Breakfast will be provided by the hotel. The majority of the workshop activities will be held at the Makerere University campus. Transportation from and to the hotel will be provided. Alternatively, participants may choose to walk the 20 minute distance.

Medical Clinic: The Clinic at the Mall www.clinicatthemall.com will serve as a potential medical facility during  JUAMI 2018. The Clinic, run Ugandan-American and European trained doctors, serves the American Embassy and accepts American, African, and other insurances. Medical claims can be filed similarly to the US and credit cards can be used as payment for treatment. This clinic provides access to a pharmacy and a variety of physician services such as routine sick visits and vaccinations.

Travel Dates: Fellows are expected to arrive on Sunday, December 9, 2018, with formal activities starting on Monday morning. The program will end at noon on Friday, December 21. Instructors and lecturers are invited to spend as much time at JUAMI as they are able.

Travel Arrangements: JUAMI organizers will assist students and instructors from Africa in making travel arrangements, whether this be by air or by ground. This permits us to directly purchase your tickets. For US participants, we ask that you purchase your tickets yourself, for which you will be later reimbursed. Because funding is provided by a federal agency (the US National Science Foundation), it is essential that travel conform to certain regulations for reimbursement. JUAMI organizers will be in communication with you to describe those regulations.

Travel by Air: Entebbe International Airport (airport code EBB), approximately 40 km or 25 mi from the center of Kampala, will be the most convenient port of entry for most international travelers. We are pleased to partner with both Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways in support of JUAMI 2018. Both airlines are providing 10% discounts for both economy class and business class fares to Entebbe, Uganda, from any worldwide departure point. To take advantage of the Kenya Airways discount, use the promo code JUAMI upon purchasing your ticket via the Kenya Airways website. This code can also be used with the airlines Jambojet, which is part of Kenya Airways, at the Jambojet website. To take advantage of the offer from Ethiopian Airlines, use the promo code JUA18 upon purchasing your ticket via the Ethiopian Airlines website. Round-trip transportation between the airport and hotel will be provided by the hotel.
